The Delhi Police has drawn massive flak the Opposition parties after they entered the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia last night and allegedly assaulted the students and staff members. A clarification was later issued by the police department that their actions were only aimed at confining protesters who had resorted to violence.
The police crackdown was preceded by the burning of four DTC buses and vandalisation of scores of other vehicles by a section of miscreants among the protesters. The Jamia students' union had subsequently issued a statement disassociating itself from the arsonists, claiming that anti-social elements had infiltrated their protest march.
The agitation by Jamia students was called against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which mandates the naturalisation of non-Muslim refugees who entered India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh on or before December 31, 2014. The law, viewed from the prism of nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise, is being viewed by a section of Muslims as a ploy to render them "stateless".
