New Delhi, Aug 31: Passengers on the Jaipur-bound IndiGo flight were stranded for hours after taking off from Kolkata on time. The plane had to be landed on emergency-basis at Varanis's Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) airport on Thursday night.

The flight crew had suspected smoke emanating from the cargo section of the Indigo aircraft, which led to the suspicion that a fire had erupted in the aircraft.

After communication with the CISF in Varanasi, permission was sought urgently from the LBS airport authorities to immediately land the flight.

The plane, after being safely landed at the Varanasi airport at 10:30pm, was evacuated. All 84 passengers were asked to wait at the airport, with their luggages scanned separately.

On inspection by top engineers, the plane was found to be in order, with no signs of fire being found.

Airport director Anil Kumar Rai said the baggages were also searched in order to avoid any danger. After a thorough check, the passengers were asked to board the flight again at 1:30am. Their luggage came hours later in a separate flight at the Jaipur airport.
