Jagannath Rath Yatra 2018: New Bhubaneshwar Railway Station Built to Avoid Congestion Ahead of Event
Bhubaneshwar, July 3: The pilgrims who visit Bhubaneshwar temple especially during the annual festival of Lord Jagannath Yatra will be gifted a new railway station by the Ministry of Railways. According to news reports, the Indian Railways has decided to open up the new railway station for the devotees before July 14, prior to the commencement of the rath yatra. "Bhubaneswar's new station will be made functional before rath yatra, as per a decision of the Railway Ministry and the exact date will be finalised soon," Chief Public Relations Officer of East Coast Railway (ECoR), J P Mishra told PTI.
As per reports, Rs. 28 crores have been spent on the construction of the new station. After the station will be made open to the public, the railways have decided to allow three passenger trains to halt there. After that, other trains including express trains will be permitted to stop at the station.
The new station is about 14 km away from the existing Bhubaneswar railway station. It is situated between Mancheswar and Barang railway stations. Apart from aiding the devotees, the new railway station will help decongest some of the crowd at the old Bhubaneswar station. Over 140 trains daily pass through the existing main station which has only six platforms, and during the yatra, the rush will only increase said a senior railway official. Besides this, the new station will also help commuters coming in from Barang, Nandankanan, Raghunathpur, Kalarahanga, Patia and other nearby areas.
The new station has nine rail lines and seven platforms. The construction of ticket counters, water facility and benches, and the installation of electrical equipment have already been completed. The station building, staff quarters and approach road are also ready, the railway official added.
