New Delhi, December 18: Delhi police have detained five persons in connection with violence in Jafrabad town during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CCA), news agency ANI reported on Wednesday. The background of detained persons was being checked by cops. Police have also filed two FIRs for rioting and damaging public properties in Jafrabad on Tuesday. Tension over the Citizenship Amendment Act spilled over to Seelampur, Jafrabad and Brijpuri on Tuesday. As many as 21 people including 12 police personnel and three from the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were injured in the violence which broke out after some miscreants attacked a school bus, pelted stones and targeted the passers-by in Seelampur, said Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar. Violence was also reported in Brijpuri where miscreants pelted stones.

"Around 300-400 people were holding peaceful protest at Brijpuri area. Suddenly they started pelting stones. We held talks with them after which they have dispersed. Situation is under control now. Few people were injured," RP Meena, Additional DCP, North East Delhi told news agency ANI. A police booth was damaged during anti-CAA protests, said Delhi Police's Public Relations Officer (PRO) MS Randhawa, adding that no police station was set ablaze.

Following the violence, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to the people to maintain calm. In a tweet in Hindi, Baijal urged people to inform the police if they see any anti-social activity. "I urge the people of the city to maintain peace. Do not indulge in any sort of violence. Inform the police about violent elements. Violence is not only illegal but also inhuman. Share your thoughts through peaceful means," Baijal said.

Kejriwal said no violence will be tolerated. "I appeal to all the people living in Delhi that they should maintain calm. No violence will be tolerated. Nothing can be achieved with violence. We have to share our thoughts in peace," he said. On Sunday, another protest turned violent during protests against the amended Citizenship Act, injuring several students from Jamia Millia Islamia University. Police arrested 10 persons in connection with the violence that led to action by police personnel inside the varsity campus. None of them were students.
