New Delhi, September 27: The Supreme Court is likely to pronounce a crucial verdict on Thursday on a batch of pleas by Muslim groups on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute seeking reconsideration by a higher bench, on the remarks made by it in a 1994 verdict that a mosque was not integral to Islam. Babri Masjid-Ram Mandir Land Dispute: Supreme Court Verdict on Ayodhya Case Likely on September 28.
The apex court will decide on the issue that whether namaz can be offered anywhere- or whether a mosque is an essential part of practising Islam and is needed for followers to offer prayers. It is one of the last verdicts of Chief Justice Deepak Misha, who is going to retire on October 1.
In 1994 verdict, the Supreme court decided that a namaz can be offered anywhere and a mosque is not necessary for offering prayers. And it also added that the government could acquire a land that a mosque is built on if needed.
Now, Muslim groups have come forward and said that the 1994 verdict was unfair to them and played a big role in the partition of disputed land in Ayodhya being divided into three parts by Allahabad High Court: it split into Muslims and Hindus, through major part was given to Hindus. Now, the court will consider if the decision should be reviewed or not.
The Muslim groups say that the 1994 verdict should be reconsidered by a five-judge panel as “it had and will have a bearing” on the Babri Masjid-Ram Temple land dispute case.
Earlier the Hindu groups have opposed the plea by Muslim counterparts. They said that verdict on namaz on this stage will further delay the hearing of Ayodhya as the counterparts know they are going to lose it.
