IPS Vijay Kumar to Become First Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir UT? A Look At Decorated Career of Cop Who Nabbed Veerappan
IPS Vijay Kumar is currently an Advisor to the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir governor. He was appointed to the post of Advisor in June last year along with IAS officer BB Vyas. The 1975-batch IPS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre earlier held the post of senior security adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Srinagar, August 9: President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday gave his assent to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 bifurcating the state into two union territories - Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. After the bill was passed, reports also surfaced that the Centre is considering Retired IPS officer Vijay Kumar and Centre's Special Representative Dineshwar Sharma for the post of Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Jammu and Kashmir UT.
While there is no official confirmation about who will be the next L-G of Jammu and Kashmir, people on social media have already started congratulating IPS Vijay Kumar.

IPS Vijay Kumar is currently an Advisor to the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir governor. He was appointed to the post of Advisor in June last year along with IAS officer BB Vyas. The 1975-batch IPS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre earlier held the post of senior security adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). He led Special Task Force that launched 'Operation Cocoon’ to nab or kill Veerappan, a sandalwood smuggler in Tamil Nadu. The retires IPS officer also served in the Kashmir Valley as Inspector General of the Border Security Force (BSF) between 1998 and 2001. He was Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for two years after Naxals killed 75 personnel in Dantewada in 2010. Kumar also head the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad in 2008.
The retired IPS officer served in the Elite Special Protection Group (SPG) with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi from 1985 to 1990. He was then posted as the SP of Dindigul district followed by Vellore district in 1991. The Narendra Modi government, on August 5, diluted Article 370 by scrapping special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The state was also divided into two union territories. According to an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh will become union territories on October 31 which also happens to be Sardar Vallabhbai Patel's 144th birth anniversary.
