Internet Services Restored Across Assam After 10 Days of Shutdown Following Protests Over CAA
The internet services were suspended after major protests had erupted across the state over the amended citizenship bill. On Thursday, the Gauhati High Court had directed the state government of Assam to restore mobile and internet services in the state by 5 pm. Broadband services have already resumed in Assam.
Guwahati, December 20: As the situation improved in Assam, which was on the boil over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the administration restored mobile internet services across the state after being suspended since December 11 following protests.The internet services were suspended after major protests had erupted across the state over the amended citizenship bill. On Thursday, the Gauhati High Court had directed the state government of Assam to restore mobile and internet services in the state by 5 pm. Broadband services have already resumed in Assam.
In Assam, the internet services were first suspended on December 11, initially for 24 hours in 10 districts of Assam. On December 16, the suspension was extended for another 24 hours in 10 districts including Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup.

After the northeastern state witnessed wingspread protest in the last week, curfew was imposed in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tinsukia and a few other cities and the army was deployed. Assam was on a boil as protesters took to streets to protests against the CAA which allows Indian citizenship to illegal Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Parsi, Jain and Buddhist migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh with December 31, 2014 being the cut-off date.
The Citizenship Amendment Act triggered nation-wide protests with led to the snapping of internet services in Delhi, Lucknow, parts of Karnataka among others. Telecom operators were instructed to shut down voice, Internet, and SMS services in several states in order to prevent misuse of social media platforms.
