New Delhi, September 11: The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that inter-religious and inter-faith marriages will promote socialism, hence, it is not averse to such relationships. "We aren't averse to interfaith marriages. Hindu-Muslim marriages are also acceptable. If they marry each other under the law, why should there be problems?" a bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra and MR Shah observed. The apex court made the observation while hearing a father's petition against the inter-faith marriage of his daughter. "It is also good if caste distinction is done away with. People in so-called high caste and low caste should marry each other. That is even better. They are good for socialism," Justice Mishra remarked. The top court also said that there was no need to examine the live-in relationship as the issue had been acknowledged by the court. "We only want to protect the interests of the couple and be sure about their bonafide. We do get concerned about the future of the women especially and that is why we want to make our efforts to secure her future," the bench said. The girl's father moved the Supreme Court after the High Court allowed her to live with her partner. In his petition, the father called her daughter's marriage with a Muslim man, who converted to Hinduism, a sham and the result of a racket.
Senior lawyer and former Attorney General, who appeared for the girl's father, submitted that there was a racket being operated in the name of inter-faith marriages and that the Supreme Court should take cognizance of it. Senior lawyers Gopal Shankarnarayan, who appeared for the girl, and Rakesh Dwivedi, who represented her husband, cited from the Supreme Court's order in the Hadiya case to oppose an investigation into the marriage.
Refusing to order an investigation into the marriage, the apex court said that it only wanted to ensure that the girl's interests are protected in peculiar facts of the case, News18 reported.
