New Delhi, Sep 18: Adding another feather to its cap, all the six crew members of INSV Tarini which went for around globe sail has been awarded the Tenzing Norgay Awards. The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award is the highest national recognition for outstanding achievements in the field of adventure on land, sea and air. The six-member crew, on board the INSV Tarini, spent 194 days at sea as part of a mission that began on 10th September 2017. The crew has also been awarded the Nav Sena Medal on the eve of 72nd Independence Day.

The Navy said that the expedition, Navika Sagar Parikrama, was the first-ever circumnavigation of the globe by an all-woman crew from India. They completed the feat in the 55-foot sailing vessel, INSV Tarini, which was inducted into the Indian Navy on February 18 last year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address this August hailed the all-women Indian Navy crew that successfully circumnavigated the globe on board the INSV Tarini. The "daughters of our country" returned home after spreading the hues of the tricolour across the oceans of the world, the prime minister said from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

 

The vessel was skippered by Lt. Commander Vartika Joshi. The crew comprised Lt. Commanders Pratibha Jamwal and P Swathi and Lieutenants S Vijaya Devi, B Aishwarya and Payal Gupta. On May 21, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba welcomed the Indian Navy's six-member all-women crew who arrived in Goa after circumnavigating the globe in over eight months on board the naval vessel INSV Tarini.
