INS Viraat to be Converted Into Museum; Maharashtra Government Clears Proposal

Decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat will be converted into a museum in Sindhudurg district by the Maharashtra government. The state government cleared a proposal to convert the decommissioned aircraft carrier on a public-private partnership basis on Thursday.

Mumbai, November 2: Decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat will be converted into a museum in Sindhudurg district. The Maharashtra government cleared a proposal on Thursday to convert the decommissioned aircraft carrier on a public-private partnership basis. The aircraft carrier is currently docked at the Naval Dockyard in the district since it was decommissioned in March 2017. the museum on INS Viraat will be at sea level. The museum will be constructed in the Arabian Sea at Nivti Rocks. A proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The location of the museum is seven nautical miles away from the Sindhudurg seashore. A high-powered committee headed by Maharashtra chief secretary DK Jain has been set up to finalise the terms and conditions for tenders to select the private partner. INS Viraat was commissioned into the British Navy in 1959 as HMS Hermes and decommissioned in 1984. It was commissioned into the Indian navy in 1987. It served in the Indian Navy for 30 years before it was decommissioned in 2016. Its last operational deployment was for participation in the International Fleet Review in February 2016.
