INS Imphal, Project 15B Destroyer, Launched by Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba
Indian Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on Saturday launched a guided missile destroyer INS Imphal at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai.
Mumbai, April 20: Indian Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on Saturday launched a guided missile destroyer INS Imphal at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai. The INS Imphal is the third ship of Project 15B. The ship has been designed indigenously by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND). The project 15b class ships 163 metres in length and 17.4 metres at beam and displaces 7,300 tonnes and are propelled four gas turbines with a maximum speed of 30 knots. These P15B ships can carry and operate two multiple role helicopters and are equipped with a varied range of state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including multi-functional surveillance radars. INS Imphal is fully designed and developed under ‘Make in India’ programme.

Last week, Admiral Lanba inaugurated a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Centre (VRC) at Directorate of Naval Design in New Delhi. The centre will provide a major boost to the indigenous warship design capabilities of the Navy and greater fillip to self-reliance under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Indian government. During his address at the inauguration ceremony, Admiral Lanba complimented the Directorate for their untiring efforts, foresight and initiatives to conceptualise design and execute the project. The Directorate of Naval Design (Submarine Design Group)) is a premier organisation of the Indian Navy and the only one in the country for design of submarines and submersibles.
