India’s COVID-19 Tally Inches Closer to 12 Lakh-Mark With 37,724 New Cases in Past 24 Hours, Death Toll Rises to 28,732

New Delhi, July 22: The COVID-19 in India continued to rise as the country reported a spike of 37,724 cases and 648 deaths in the past 24 hours. With the latest spike, the total coronavirus cases in the country is now at 11,92,915 while the death toll due to the pandemic has mounted to 28,732. Of the total cases, 4,11,133 are active cases while 7,53,049 individuals have been cured and discharged from the hospitals. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday said that the total number of samples tested up to July 21 is 1,47,24, 546 including 3,43,243 samples tested on Tuesday. India has been witnessing a drop in the number of coronavirus cases from the last two days. On Tuesday, India heaved a sigh of relief as the spike in fresh cases showed a dip of around 3,000 with Health Ministry data showing 37,148 new cases being reported in past 24 hours from over 40,000 cases in a day earlier. India's COVID-19 Fatality Rate Drops to 2.46%, Recovery Rate Inches Closer to 63%.

India continues to be the third worst-hit country by COVID-19 after the US and Brazil. In India, Maharashtra remained the worst hit state with the COVID-19  cases rising to 3,27,031 with 8,369 fresh cases till Tuesday night. With 246 new deaths, the death toll mounted to 12,276, the state Health department said. Mumbai's COVID-19 tally rises to 1,03,262 with addition of 995 new cases; 62 deaths take toll to 5,814, the BMC said.

After Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu was the second worst-hit state by coronavirus with the total tally rising to 180,643 while the death toll mounted to 2,626. As many as 4,965 persons tested positive for coronavirus in the state over the past 24 hours while 4,894 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals, said the State Health Department.
