Indian Railways Achieves Major Safety Milestone in 2019, Zero Passenger Death Reported First Time in 166 Years

In a major milestone in safety, the financial year 2019-20 was the safest year for the Indian railways. For the first time in its 166-year-long history, there were zero passenger deaths during the current fiscal for Indian Railway. The report also added that consequential accidents have seen a 95 percent reduction in last 38 years.

New Delhi, December 25: In a major milestone in safety, the financial year 2019-20 was the safest year for the Indian Railways. For the first time in its 166-year-long history, there were zero passenger deaths during the current fiscal for Indian Railway, Business Today reported. In 1960-61, the number of accidents was 2,131, which went down to 840 in 1970-71. The number of accidents in 1980-81 stood at 1,013, in 1990-91 it was recorded at 532, in 2010-11 only 141 such cases were reported. In 2017-18, 73 accidents were reported. The number of casualties went down in FY2019 due to continuous implementation of safety measures. During FY19, Indian Railways reported 59 accidents. One of the major safety achievements for the railways in recent times has been getting rid of all unmanned level crossing on its network across the country. As many as 3,478 unmanned level crossings were eliminated.
