New Delhi, August 21: The Indian armed forces will get its first human rights cell, which will be headed by Major General rank officer. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday approved the proposal of setting up of human rights cell.  An IPS officer will also be part of the cell to enhance transparency and ensure the best of investigative expertise. Indian Army Begins Recruitment of Women For Military Police For The First Time.

The defence ministry in a statement said, “To give high priority to observance of human rights convention and values, it has been decided to set up a special Human Rights Section headed by ADG (Major General rank officer) directly under the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS).” Indian Army Working as Peacekeepers in Jammu And Kashmir: General Bipin Rawat.

The Indian Army time and again rejected allegations of human rights violation in Jammu and Kashmir, and North-East states. Last year, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had dismissed the United Nations report on Human Rights in Kashmir. He had said that some of these reports are motivated.

In addition to this, the defence minister also approved certain decisions regarding the re-organisation of Army Headquarters. A separate vigilance cell under the Army Chief will also be set up. The cell will have three Colonel-level officers - one each from the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. Another important decision taken today is to shift 206 combat worthy officers from Delhi to field areas.
