An Indian-American woman Minal Patel Davis received a Presidential Medal for her efforts at combating human trafficking. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo awarded her with the medal at the White House. Minal, who has been serving as the special advisor to Houston mayor Sylvester Turner, said that winning the award has been “unbelievable. Minal who is a first-generation US citizen said that she’s the first one in her family to work for the Mayor’s office. She has a Master’s degree in business administration from the University of Connecticut and a BA from New York University. Minal was appointed in July 2015. At a policy level, her contributions have immensely contributed to a local impact on human trafficking in Houston.

She now working towards executing the very first strategic response protocol in the US, the Anti-Human Strategic Plan in the city under Mayor Turner. Davis has been quite outspoken about the problem of human trafficking at various local and international arenas, representing the city of Houston. In the past, she’s been a speaker at the United Nations World Humanitarian Summit and has also travelled to India and Canada for knowledge sharing about means to tackle human trafficking.
