Kedarnath, April 3, Mi-17 V-5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed on Tuesday near the Kedarnath temple. The accident occurred after the helicopter collided with an iron girder near the helipad. The helicopter was carrying some stuff for the Army when the accident took place. Six people are reportedly injured in the crash. The cause of the accident is still not known. Further details are awaited.
Last year, one Mi-17 helicopter of the Indian Air Force crashed near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. In this accident seven defence personnel were killed including two IAF pilots.
The Mi-17 V-5 is a Russian helicopter which is considered to be an advanced version of Mi-8/17 family of helicopters. It is deployed in troops and arms transport. It is produced by Kazan Helicopters, a subsidiary of Russian Helicopters. The Mi-17V-5 has a maximum speed of 250km/h, and a standard range of 580km, which can be extended to 1,065km when fitted with two auxiliary fuel tanks. It can fly at a maximum altitude of 6,000m. The aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight of 13,000 kg.
