Mumbai, January 30: India climbed three spots up from last year and is placed at 78th position in the list of least corrupt countries, according to a global corruption watchdog. India got a score of 41 points in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2018 by the Berlin-based organisation Transparency International. Last year, India had received 40 CPI points. Meanwhile, Denmark topped the list this year with 88 points followed by New Zealand with a score of 87 points. The United Kingdom is placed at 11th position, whereas the United States is knocked out of the top 20 least corrupted countries. The USA is placed at the 22nd spot as compared to 18th position last year. Meanwhile, Asian giant China is below India at 87th position with 39 rating points. According to the survey, Somalia is the most corrupted country with 10 rating points.

The survey is conducted across 180 countries. The index calculated levels of public sector corruption according to experts and businesspeople on the scale of 1 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt, and 100 is very clean.
Last week, a Ranking and Analysis project by U.S. News & World Report, BAV Group and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania considered India as the second best country to start a business. Meanwhile, Thailand maintains the top spot. In the ranking China has climbed up three spots and is now placed at the third spot, followed by Singapore and Malaysia on the fourth and fifth spots respectively.
