New Delhi, February 28: Tensions have reached a peak between India and Pakistan after Pakistan Air Force's jets attempted to target military installations on the Indian side on Wednesday, a day after the Indian Air Force conducted strikes on a Jaish-e-Mohammed camp in Pakistan's Balakot. While the IAF foiled PAF's bid to violate the Indian airspace, India lost one MiG 21, the pilot of which "is missing in action". Catch live news updates on India-Pakistan tensions here.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Pakistan claims the missing pilot is in their custody. “We are ascertaining that,” Raveesh Kumar, spokesperson of MEA, said on Wednesday. While India said it shot down one PAF's fighter aircraft, Pakistan denied it and claimed the FAP shot down two Indian jets. Pakistan also claimed that an IAF pilot is in their custody. He has identified himself as Abhinandan Varthaman, Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor said. India-Pakistan Tension: Blacklist Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar, UK, US and France Tell UN Security Council.

India on Wednesday also accused Islamabad of committing an "unprovoked act of aggression" by targeting Indian military posts with its air force and sought immediate and safe return of the IAF pilot. India issued a demarche to Pakistan, objecting to the "vulgar display" of the injured IAF pilot in violation of all norms and said Islamabad must ensure that no harm is done to the Indian defence personnel in its custody. After Imran Khan's Pitch For Talks, India Hands Over Dossier to Pakistan With Details of JeM Role in Pulwama Attack.

India conducted a major preemptive strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp early Tuesday, killing a “very large number” of terrorists, trainers and senior commanders. India’s action comes close on the heels of the Pulwama incident in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed in one of the deadliest terror strikes in decades in Jammu and Kashmir.
