New Delhi, September 26: With numerous taxpayers failing to file their Income Tax returns by August 31 -- which was extended to September 30, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Thursday extended the due date for filing of ITRs and Tax Audit Reports from September 30 to October 31 for the assessment year (AY) 2019-20. This new development comes hours after the report arrived that the IT department has identified about 4,00,000 taxpayers who are all set to face scrutiny under the new faceless assessment scheme.

Issuing a notice on the official social media handle, the Income Department stated that they had made the changes after they received several complaints from across the country. It wrote, "On consideration of representations recd from across the country, CBDT has decided to extend the due date for filing of ITRs & Tax Audit Reports from 30th Sep,2019 to 31st of Oct,2019 in respect of persons whose accounts are required to be audited. Earlier in the day, the Income Tax stated that they had identified about 4,00,000 taxpayers who are all set to face scrutiny under the new faceless assessment scheme -- computer-assisted scrutiny selection (CASS). The department stated that they have already served notice to over 1,00,000 assessees, asking them to explain on the returns filed within 15 days. The deadline for sending scrutiny letters is September 30.
