Income Tax Department Extends Deadline for Filing of Response to IT Notices Till January 10

The Income Tax department on Tuesday issued extended the deadline for filing of response to income tax notices till January 10 for those who received notice before. These are the notices which are issued under notices under Section 142(1).

Mumbai, December 25: The Income Tax department on Tuesday issued extended the deadline for filing of response to income tax notices till January 10 for those who received notice before. These are the notices which are issued under notices under Section 142(1).

Issuing the notification, the the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said, "With a view to provide relief to the taxpayers and tax professionals and to facilitate the compliance with respect to e-Assessment proceedings under E-assessment Scheme, 2019, the time limit for filing of response to notices under section 142(1) of the Income-tax Act issued up to 24.12.2019 by the National e-Assessment Centre is extended up to 10.01.2020 or time given in such notices, whichever is later." Earlier, the Income Tax department launched e-assessment or faceless assessment of income tax returns (ITR). Under this, all income tax notices were issued online. In that notification taxpayers were asked to check their e-filing account and through e-mails so that at a track of such notices can be kept. The notification had stated that the taxpayers need to reply within 15 days.

However, with the new notification, the deadline has been further extended till 10 January for those who received notices till December 24. Making the compliance mandatory, the IT department made it clear the deadline has been extended only for those who received notice Section 142(1) and had asked for additional information and documents or order to file return.

It is to be known that the IT department started e-assessment scheme to mark every notice with a Documentation Identification Number (DIN), without which all notices would be treated invalid. Taxpayers can visit the Income Tax department's e-filing website and click on "Notice/Order Issued by ITD" button on the left side in order to check status.
