The suicide rate among students is only increasing. Stress during exams, competition to score better and the expectations of parents are a few causes of leading to such fatal incidents. As suggested by experts, suicide crises in India’s schools and colleges are worsening. A similar disheartening case has appeared in the news headlines once again after a student from the Indian Institute (IIT) of Madras committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his hostel room. Police officials speculate the reason to be poor attendance due to which the young engineering candidate was afraid if he would be able to appear in the final year exams. Identified as Shahal Kormath in a TOI report, the 23-year-old who hails from Kerala did not leave any suicide note. Due to low attendance in the classroom record, Kormath feared that he would not be allowed to sit for the examination. Authorities of IIT-Madras administration recently informed his parents about his attendance shortage. As per the report, the incident happened today morning, September 22. When Kormath’s friend knocked on the door of his room, he got no response. The student informed the hostel warden who then informed the Kotturpuram police officials. Kormath’s body has been sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for a post-mortem. It was further reported that the police had registered a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) for unnatural death. His brother was coming to Chennai to receive the body. If we go by reports, this would be the third case of an IIT student committing suicide in September alone. Earlier this month, an IIT Bombay student was found dead in a Mumbai hotel room. The police officials found many tablets that are taken for depression in the area. A few days later, a student of IIT Guwahati took ger life leaving a suicide note stating that she wanted to become a teacher and not an engineer.
