IIT Kanpur Mulling Action Against Students Singing 'Hum Dekhenge' During Anti-CAA Stir, Probing Whether Faiz Ahmed Faiz's Poem is 'Anti-Hindu'

The investigating team assigned by the premier institute will look into three factors - whether the students violated prohibitory orders through their protest march, whether the posts shared by them on social media were inflammatory and if 'Hum Dekhenge' of Faiz offends the sentiments of Hindus.

Lucknow, January 1: The Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur has constituted a probe to ascertain whether students leading an anti-CAA demonstration in the campus offended religious sentiments by singing late Pakistani poet's famous work - "Hum Dekhenge". The song written in 1979, which became a symbol of revolution in the subcontinent, is being probed by the IIT Kanpur whether it is "anti-Hindu". UP DGP OP Singh Orders SIT Inquiry into Violence During Anti-CAA Protests.

The probe was ordered after a teacher filed a complaint against the students who took out a demonstration against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the campus on December 17. One of the students, who had protested against the law, said the protest march was taken out to condemn the alleged police brutalities against their counterparts in Delhi's Jamia Millia on December 15.

The investigating team assigned by the premier institute will look into three factors - whether the students violated prohibitory orders through their protest march, whether the posts shared by them on social media were inflammatory and if "Hum Dekhenge" of Faiz offends the sentiments of Hindus.

The anti-CAA protests are underway in several parts of the nation, as critics of the Centre-ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have called the law violative of the "secular principles" of the Constitution. A section of Muslims, who have hit the streets in protest, view the CAA, in prism of the proposed nationwide NRC, as a ploy to revoke their citizenship.

The poem of Faiz, which was used by the IIT Kanpur students to mark their dissent against the citizenship law, has also been used in several protest rallies by those affiliated to Left students' bodies. Faiz, the writer of "Hum Dekhenge" was a Communist who was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He had written the song to protest against the then dictatorial regime of General Zia ul Haque.
