Hyderabad Women's College Bans Shorts, Sleeveless Dresses, Says 'Long Kurtis Will Fetch Good Marriage Proposals'

Hyderabad, September 15: A reputed college in Hyderabad has placed dress code for girl students, banning shorts and sleeveless dress in the campus. Students of St Francis College For Women have been ordered to wear Kurtis below knee length with sleeves in the campus. Many students were sent back when they turned up wearing dresses that were not as per the "guidelines". A video has surfaced on social media in which students are seen terming the diktat as regressive, backward and outdated. "At a time when we are talking about women empowerment, such a diktat is against the entire campaign," one of the students is heard saying in the video. Zanobia Tumbi, a former student of the college, said that the student representatives were told that "a long Kurti would get us good marriage proposals". Tamil Nadu Dress Code for State Government Employees: Saree, Salwar-Kameez for Women, Men Allowed Shirts With Formal Pants or Veshti.

In a Facebook post, Tumbi said that the college authorities told the student representatives that "standing up for a cause is blasphemous, raising your voice is blasphemous". She alleged that students were hounded and forced to leave college campus by security guards for wearing a Kurti that "was just an inch or less above the knee".

The college also hired female security guards to check the length of the Kurtis, India Today reported. "They went ahead and pulled girls by their id cards and even pulled their Kurtis," Zanobia Tumbi stated. The students have called for a protest against the new dress code on Monday.
