A Joint Action Committee (JAC) will take out a procession against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Hyderabad on December 28 even though police have denied permission for it.
Hyderabad, December 27: A Joint Action Committee (JAC) will take out a procession against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Hyderabad on December 28 even though police have denied permission for it. A delegation of JAC on Friday met Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar and urged him to reconsider their request for permission to hold a march against the CAA and NRC. Why Citizenship Amendment Act+NRC Raise Fear And Concerns: A Multi-Dimensional Take.
The JAC has called for a "Million March" against the CAA and NRC at Hyderabad's Necklace Road. However, police made it clear that no permission has been granted for any procession or march or gathering. "No permission has been given for any procession/rally/march/public assembly anywhere in the city including TankBund and its surroundings on 28-12-2019. Public should not believe any fake news, rumours or propaganda in this regard," said P Viswaprasad, DCP of Central Zone.
Notably, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), ideological backbone of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), recently held a meeting in Hyderabad. Asked why permission was granted to the RSS meeting and the same has been denied for anti-CAA protest, Commissioner Anjani Kumar said that protests on public roads would adversely impact vehicular traffic in the city, The News Minute reported.
Protests are being held against the CAA which gives Indian citizenship to immigrants fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan - but not if they are Muslim. Protesters see the CAA through the prism of National Register of Citizens. While non-Muslims left out of the proposed nationwide NRC could be able to get citizenship under the CAA, Muslims who could not make the list may be deported.
