Hyderabad, May 27: In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at KIMS Cuddles of Kondapur in Telangana's Hyderabad successfully treated an 18-month-old baby girl who suffered lung failure and other life-threatening complications after accidentally ingesting mosquito repellent.
According to The New Indian Express report, the young patient, hailing from Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, was initially admitted to a local hospital in Raipur after the incident. However, her condition worsened, prompting a specialised team of medical experts from KIMS Cuddles to intervene. The team, comprising two intensivists, a perfusionist, an ICU nurse, and a cardiac surgeon, flew to Raipur to assess the situation. Their diagnosis revealed severe chemical pneumonitis caused by hydrocarbons present in the mosquito repellent. Miraculous Save! Doctors at Kanpur Help Preterm Baby Born Without Enough Oxygen Survive.

The baby's condition deteriorated further due to ineffective ventilation caused by severe right ventricular dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. To save her life, the team employed ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a sophisticated technique that provides external support to the heart and lungs. After stabilising the baby's breathing, she was airlifted from Raipur to Hyderabad. For nine days, she remained on ECMO, followed by an additional six days on a ventilator. Remarkably, after 18 days of intensive treatment, the baby made a full recovery. She regained her activity levels and was discharged in good health with a normal neurological outcome. Dr Parag Dekate, Clinical Director of Pediatrics at KIMS Cuddles, emphasised the critical role played by the hospital's advanced facilities and the expertise of the medical team.
