Husband Fat Shames Wife Detained by Mumbai Police; Calls Her ‘Moti’ & Tortures for Dowry

As per the FIR lodged at the city’s BKC police station, the complainant was going through severe trauma as, after her marriage, she would be beaten by her husband.

Both dowry and fat shaming, if committed can land you in some serious trouble. Where the former one is illegal in India, commenting on someone’s size or shape is equally not appreciated. Our body is one of the most precious tools we have. But some humans seem never to understand that it is not cool to talk or make fun of anyone’s appearances. At recent, a man in Mumbai has learnt a hard lesson. The report further stated that the husband would call her “moti” (fat) and physically abused her for a dowry of Rs. 18 lakh and a car, which her parents refused to give. And it was not just the husband but his sister and mother who would equally torture and body shame her. The couple had an arranged marriage in 2017. The 26-year-old who chose not be identified stated as quoted by mid-day, “My in-laws have been demanding Rs 18 lakh and a Swift car even though they were given gold worth Rs 18 lakh at the time of marriage. The girl’s statement also reads, “My in-laws had thought that if they tortured me, my parents would agree to their demand, but that didn't happen.” The Senior Inspector of BKC police station, Kalpana Gadekar reported that an FIR had been lodged against her husband and in-laws under sections 498A (husband or his family subjecting girl to cruelty), 506 (criminal intimidation, 504 (breach of peace), 406 (breach of trust) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The alleged husband will be called for interrogation before the law takes final course of action.
