New Delhi, January 7: The Indian Meteorological Department has said that 2010-19 was the warmest decade on record with temperatures in the country rising 0.36°C more than average. According to a Times of India report, 2019 was the seventh warmest on record and 22nd straight year of higher-than-average annual temperatures.
2019 also witnessed some extreme weather conditions, but the warmest year on record was 2016. Last year, there were extreme weather conditions during all the seasons. From strong heat waves in Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra to seeing a record number of cyclones and extended monsoon season. In 2019, India witnessed extreme weather conditions ranging from the highest monsoon in the last 25 years, heatwaves, flash flooding to intense winter spells. The extreme weather events have been increasing mainly due to the increase in population and its migration towards urban areas. It is due to global warming that intense bursts of rainfall are experienced as a higher temperature increases the moisture-holding capacity of the atmosphere.
