Ahmednagar, May 6: In an incident of honour killing, a couple was set on fire by the woman's father over their inter-caste marriage. The incident took place at Nighoj village in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar on May 1. While the woman, identified as Rukmini, died of burn injuries, her husband Mangesh Chandrakant Ranasing is battling for his life. He suffered over 40 percent burns.
Ranasing and Rukmini got married in November last year going against the wishes of her parents. According to Inspector Vijaykumar Botre, Rukmini had come to Nighoj village to visit her parents on April 30. When Ranasing came to take Rukmini back to the marital home, her father Rama Bharathiya, her uncle Surendrakumar and maternal uncle Ghanshyam Ranej locked the couple in a room. The three accused set the couple ablaze, said the police. Neighbours who heard the couple’s screams managed to rescue them and informed the police. "We rushed them to Sassoon Hospital in Pune where Rukmini died on Sunday while undergoing treatment. In her dying declaration, she has named the accused," Botre told news agency PTI. The police have arrested Surendrakumar and Ghanshyam, while the woman's father Rama Bharathiya is absconding. "An investigation is underway and efforts are on to nab him," Botre added. The police termed the incident a case of honour killing.
