New Delhi, October 10:  The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to file a report indicating the procedure to be followed by it to put hologram-based coloured stickers on vehicles so as to indicate the nature of fuel being used in the vehicle. The apex court was hearing a PIL related to air pollution in Delhi-NCR region. Deforestation in Aravali Hills Causing Pollution in Delhi-NCR Says NHRC, Issues Notice to Centre, Rajasthan and Haryana.

Earlier, the top court on August 13 had accepted the Central government’s proposal to mark vehicles in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) region with different hologram-based coloured stickers indicating the nature of fuel used in the fuel. The proposal was that petrol and CNG-run vehicles will be marked with a light blue coloured sticker, and diesel run vehicles to be marked by an orange coloured sticker.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice M B Lokur, also comprised justices S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta. The bench had asked the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to ensure that the coloured stickers be put to use by September 30.

The suggestion for the use of colour-coded stickers to identity the type and nature of fuel in the vehicle was suggested by Advocate Aparajita Singh, while assisting the court as amicus curiae in the air pollution matter. The suggestion was made by the advocate when the court was hearing a petition on air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region. Experts believe that if implemented properly, the move could help in better pollution control in the region.
