Shimla, August 13: Heavy rains leading to landslide has resulted in the death of at least five people in the hilly state of India's Himachal Pradesh. According to media reports, Shimla, Kangra and Solan are the worst hit districts due to heavy rainfall and flash floods.

Heavy rainfall since Sunday evening, and a cloud burst have resulted in flash floods in Shimla. Reports of landslides and waterlogging have been reported from several districts of the state.

Schools in Solan district, where one person reportedly died after getting washed away in the floods, have been closed along with schools in districts of Shimla, Mandi Kullu and Kangra, reported The Times of India. Traffic movement from Kandaghat to Chail halted after a part of a bridge collapsed following heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in several districts in the state. The weather agency data said that 239 mm rains were recorded in Paonta Sahib and 238 mm in Sujanpur Tihra.

Meanwhile, Kerala continues to reel under floods and reports of fresh rains in Idukki district has been reported. On Sunday, Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, said that those who have lost their passport due to the floods, can get a new one made free of charge by contacting the nearest centres.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, announced an additional relief package of Rs 100 crores, and described the floods in the state as "unprecedented crisis." At least 39 people have died, and over 30,000 people evacuated from various districts of Kerala. A red alert has been announced for the next two days in the state. A report by Home Ministry says that at least 718 people have died in floods or rain related incidents this monsoon, in seven states.
