Shimla, August 19: The National Highway (NH) 3 between Manali and Kullu has been partially damaged following heavy rainfall in the state. Following the heavy rainfall, more than 22 people have been killed and several people were stranded and injured. Twenty-five tourists, including a foreigner, who were stranded for over two days in Kullu without access to food and shelter, were finally rescued on Sunday. Landslides have cut off several parts of the state, leaving hundreds of tourists and locals stranded. Train services between Kalka and Shimla and traffic on the Chandigarh-Manali highway was disrupted. Incessant rain has led to flooding in the district. Two people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents in Kullu.

All schools and colleges in Shimla, Solan, Kullu and Bilaspur districts will be closed on Monday. Train services between Shimla and Kalka in Haryana are expected to resume from Monday. Meanwhile, excess water was released from the Nathpa Jhakri plant, which is India’s largest hydro project, in Kinnaur district as a preventive measure.

Landslides blocked the national highways between Chandigarh and Manali, and Shimla and Kinnaur. Several teams were sent to rescue around 60 people from Uttarakhand stranded near Shimla’s Rohru area.
