Himachal Pradesh Becomes 4th State to Approve 10% Quota for Economically Weaker Section in Upper Castes

Himachal Pradesh has become the fourth state after Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttarakhand to implement the 10 per cent quota for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

New Delhi, January 19: Himachal Pradesh has become the fourth state after Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttarakhand to implement the 10 per cent quota for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in General Category by Central Government in government jobs and education. The announcement was made by Himachal Pradesh government on Saturday. 10% Upper Caste Quota Bill Cleared by President Ram Nath Kovind.

The legislation bill was brought by Prime Minister Narendra Modi government sanctioning 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker section among the upper caste communities(General) was signed by President Ram Nath Kovind on January 11. 10% Upper Caste Quota to Boost Confidence of Financially Weak Citizens: PM Modi at BJP National Convention.

The bill was earlier passed by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha with more than the required two-third majority. In Lok Sabha 323 MPs were in favour of the bill, whereas, only 3 voting against it. While in the Upper House, 165 lawmakers validated the Bill, and only 7 voted against it.

The 124th Constitution Amendment Bill is reservation for EWS in general category who possess less than 5 acres of land and whose annual income is less than 8 lakhs.
