High Security Number Plates For Vehicles Mandatory From October 13, Violation Can Land You in Jail

The transport department found around 40 lakh vehicles not having proper registration plates. The vehicles which were found violating the law of having a sophisticated number plate include two-whellers as well as four wheelers, said a report in the Times of India. The report also says that failing to get the new number plates registered by October 13 will invite a jail term.

The Supreme Court, in the year 2012, had directed all the states and union territories to ensure that all the high security plates were registered till June 15, 2012.

Now, the transport department has said that the process for registering the high-security new plates will begin from October 2, 2018. The deadline for registering the number plates will be October 13, failing which provisions for court proceedings have been put in place by the transport department.

How to apply for a new number plate online?

People can apply for a new number plate online too by providing their vehicle registration number and paying the fee online. A software is being developed for online registration which will be operational soon. The government will advertise about the online registration portal for the new high security number plates as soon as the website will be ready.

What are new high-security plates?

The new high-security plates are made of aluminium with high reflexive plates. The purpose behind having the new high security number plates is to make them temper-proof.

As per the information available, petrol and CNG-run vehicles' will have light blue stickers on the new high security plates and the diesel- run vehicles will have orange stickers.
