Heavy Rains Forecast For South India, Red Alert Issued in Kerala Districts

The Indian Meteorological Department today issued a warning predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

Thrissur, October 4: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued a warning predicting heavy to very heavy rains in isolated places of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala. Following the IMD forecast, a red alert has been issued in three districts of Kerala-Palakkad, Idukki and Thrissur for October 7. Few other places like the South interior of Karnataka, Lakshwadeep and Andaman and Nicobar are also expected to receive heavy rain shower.

It has begun pouring in Puducherry and many educational institutions remained shut on Thursday. According to a PTI report, the emergency meeting of Revenue and Disaster Management Department was held where district collectors reviewed the situation. Karnataka Cyclone Alert: Heavy Rain Forecast Due to Low-pressure Trough over Arabian Sea.

“It is still a low-pressure area, not a cyclone as of now. It is very likely to concentrate into a depression and move north-west towards the coast of Oman in the next 36 hours. Due to the cyclone warning, fishermen across Lakshwadeep, South Kerala coast, Comorin area, Southeast Arabian sea and Central Arabian sea have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea.

Meanwhile, Kerala CMO has put up a notice on its Facebook wall to warn people about the change in water. In the post, he said Govt is trying to communicate with sailors who left for fishing, with the plan of long duration sailing. Measures will be taken to bring them back before October 5. The Fisheries Department has been instructed to be ready with water ambulances and emergency rescue boats.
