Mumbai, December 29: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra government on Saturday issued a statement stating that the bars, hotels and pubs could remain open at night in Mumbai on December 31.
The above statement came just before the New Year eve, as Mumbaikars and people from other parts of the state are planning a special event on December 31. Earlier, Shiv Sena youth wing chief Aditya Thackeray had written to CM Fadnavis to allow markets, especially in non-residential areas, to remain open all night in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai and other cities on New Year. According to the letter, Thackeray had stated that this move would generate employment and generate revenue for the state. He had written, as reported by the Indian Express, “The residents of the country’s financial and entertainment hub need more space and time to unwind after hours of work.”
Thackeray also reminded the CM of a resolution of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) – passed in 2013 – in which they allowed hotels and shops in non-residential areas in Mumbai to remain open 24X7.
Security:
Along with the state government, Mumbai Police have said that the department is ready to provide security to people. For this, the department would deploy 40,000 personnel on December 31 on vigil. Also, special squads will be deployed to curb harassment of women at many places.
Mumbai Police’s official spokesperson DCP Manjunath Singe said, as reported by PTI, “Over 40,000 policemen will be on bandobast (security) duty during the New Year celebrations.”
