Dehradun, October 19: The manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of several products including gutka and pan masala has been banned in Uttarakhand for a year. The state government in its order put a complete ban on the on sale of several products which have a high content of tobacco and nicotine in them. According to a report by ANI, an order to this effect was issued in the hill state by Food Safety Commissioner Nitesh Kumar Jha on Friday.

The decision to ban gutka and pan masala was taken in view of the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine-based chewing products on human health. Giving details about the reason behind the ban, the order stated that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India prohibits use of tobacco and nicotine as an ingredient in any product meant for human consumption. The order further added saying that it has been found that gutka, pan masala and several other similar products being sold under different names continue to have a high content of them as components. In May this year, the Delhi government had extended the ban on manufacture, storage, sale or distribution of gutkha, pan masala and any other tobacco products for one year in the national capital. However, no such ban was enforced on cigarettes.
