Kolkata, November 1: West Bengal government has put a total ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of gutka and pan masala in the state for a year with effect from  November 7.  The decision was taken keeping in mind the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine-based chewing products on human health.

A few days ago, the Uttarakhand government put a total ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of products like gutka and pan masala which have a high content of tobacco and nicotine in them. Last month, the Rajasthan government banned certain categories of pan masala and flavoured tobacco products made of magnesium, carbonate, nicotine and mineral oil. The other states that have imposed the ban are Maharashtra and Bihar.

The government in these states imposed the ban under the Food Security Act. Every year, several people lose their lives due to cancer and the consumption of tobacco.
