Lahore, July 30: A special 'jatha', comprising of 500 pilgrims have crossed over to Pakistan and they will begin celebrations on the auspicious occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak from his birthplace, Nankana Sahib on August 1. The pilgrims will reach Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib via the Wagha Border to attend the event. The Pakistan embassy has granted visa to 504 devotees who will cross the Attari-Wagah border on Tuesday to take part in the ‘Nagar kirtan’. Nagar Kirtan is a Sikh custom involving the processional singing of holy hymns throughout a community.

This is for the first time, the event will start from Pakistan and culminate in India. The event will begin from Nankana Sahib in Pakistan on August 1 to end at Sultanpur Lodhi in India on August 30.

Reportedly in order to avoid the time-consuming formalities during crossing the Wagah-border, it was decided that the Bir of Sri Guru Granth Sahib would cross the border with a devotee carrying the Sikh holy book on his head.
