Gurmeet was convicted of rape and murder cases in 2017 by CBI. His conviction led to widespread violence from members of the DSS and simultaneous clashes with the police, which left several dead and injured. On 28 August 2017, Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Earlier this year, the CBI court in Panchkula convicted Gurmeet for the murder of journalist Ramchander Chhatrapati in October 2012 and sentenced him for life. The hearing took place through video conference. The Dera chief was found guilty of orchestrating the killing of Chhatrapati after the scribe wrote against Ram Rahim in his newspaper titled ‘Poora Sach’.
In connection with the Honeypreet bail plea, a Punjab and Haryana High Court judge has recused himself on Tuesday from hearing a bail plea filed by the adopted daughter of convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. She is in jail in connection with the violence that broke out in Panchkula in Haryana on August 25, 2017, following the conviction of the Dera chief.
