Gujarat, July 25: To make roads more pedestrian friendly and to reduce traffic congestion, the Gujarat government is planning to impose "one citizen one vehicle" policy soon. According to a news report in the Times of India, Gujarat transport commissioner has asked all district RTOs to prepare a database of people owning cars and how many have more than one cars.

RM Jadhav, the transport commissioner, was quoted as saying, "We have directed all RTOs to prepare a database of vehicles owners having vehicles more than one as well as vehicles older than 15 years." Besides this, the RTOs has been asked to get feedback from people to understand what implications  will the policy have after it is imposed. "Only after studying all the aspects of the policy, final decision to introduce one citizen one vehicle policy will be taken," added Jadhav.

Besides this, Ahmedabad's newly-appointed municipal corporation commissioner Vijay Nehra also stated that the biggest challenge before them is to resolve the traffic menace. The commissioner, in one of his tweets, remarked that there is a need to redesign the city roads, especially in Ahmedabad city.

Here is the tweet made by the commissioner:

A pedestrian friendly city is going to be at the core of our planning. We need to redesign #Ahmedabad roads and streets so that we can build a city for ppl and not a city for cars

Big challenge for @AhmedabadAMC but we will do it with the support of like minded ctzns https://t.co/fqKKoOvPvM

The move has come after the Gujarat High Court (HC) pulled up the state government for doing nothing to resolve traffic woes in the city, after which, the government shared the idea for the policy. Section 33 of the Gujarat Road Safety Authority Act, 2018 empowers the government to restrict citizens from owning and purchasing more than one vehicles.
