Ahmedabad, May 22: Muggers can cause serious injury or even risk peoples live while committing robbery, even after that they are booked under section 379 which allows them to go scot-free in a day. .The Criminal Bill 2018 (Gujarat Amendment) will provide a maximum jail of 10 years and a fine upto Rs 25,000 if anyone is convicted for chain snatching in the state. In India, chain snatchers are usually charged under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code which is related to theft and invites punishment upto three years of prison or fine or both. The Gujarat government last year amended section 379 by adding two clauses, IPC 379(A) and 379(B), thus incorporating the stringent punishment, the official said.

According to the new law, for an attempt of snatching, the accused can get a minimum of three years and maximum seven years imprisonment. For committing the crime, the accused can get a maximum prison of seven years. However, if the accused injures somebody, he will be liable to get imprisonment of up to 10 years.
