Gujarat: Around 40,000 Migrant Workers from Bihar And UP Flee The State After Increase In Attacks On Non-Gujaratis
Thousands of migrant workers, mostly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, have fled Gujarat over the past couple of days due to several attacks on migrant workers and industrial units.
Gandhinagar, October 8: Thousands of migrant workers, mostly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, have fled Gujarat over the past couple of days due to several attacks on migrant workers and industrial units. According to a report of News 18, about 40,000 have fled the state. Meanwhile, Home Minister of the state Pradeepsinh Jadeja appealed to the people not to be frightened as the state government is taking actions against the culprits. He said that till now 35 FIRs were lodged and in the last 24 hours, the attacks have been decreased.
Jadeja further added, “It is our responsibility to provide security to those who come to Gujarat for employment from other states. We are in touch with the Central Govt. We have submitted a report to the central govt regarding every incident.” Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also broke his silence over the attacks. Kumar said that he had spoken to Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and demanded that those who had committed the crime should be punished. Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Shivanand Jha on Sunday said that over 342 people were arrested in connection with the attacks on migrant workers. Migrant workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were attacked after a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha was allegedly raped by a Bihari Migrant. The incident took place on September 28 in a village near Himmatnagar town of Sabarkantha district, around 100 km from Ahmedabad. The victim belongs to the Thakor community. A delegation of the Sabarkantha District Ceramic Industries Association met CM Vijay Rupani and Deputy CM Nitin Pate, after which 100 industrial units in Sabarkantha, Aravali and Mehsana in north Gujarat have been provided with additional security by the state government.
