Mumbai, February 27: A new Guinness world record of the 'Most diabetic eye screenings in 8 hours' was created in Mumbai recently. The feat was achieved by a well-known ophthalmologist and president All India Ophthalmologist Society Doctor S Natarajan, his doctor colleague Radhika and Aditya Jyot Foundation for Twinkling Little Eyes (all India) by screening eyes of 649 diabetic patients. The official Guinness website states: "The most diabetic eye screenings in eight hours is 649, and was achieved at an event organised by Dr S Natarajan, Dr Radhika K and Aditya Jyot Foundation for Twinkling Little Eyes (all India), in Dharavi, India, on 2 February 2019. Through this attempt, many people from poorer backgrounds with diabetes were able to receive screening and checkup." Diabetic eye screening is considered as a key part of diabetes care. People who are suffering from diabetes are at risk of damage from diabetic retinopathy (DR). Every year, thousands of people lose their eyes due to diabetic retinopathy, which affects the blood vessels ar the back of the eye. It is the most common cause of blindness among diabetics.
Acknowledging this, DR S Natarajan and Dr Radhika tried to provide free screening to the residents of Dharavi. The screening was done with help of the civic body of Mumbai i.e Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Tata Trust.
