GST Filing For FY 2018-19: 80% Taxpayers Fail to File Return, Modi Govt Extends Deadline Till August 31

Despite repeated deadline extensions by the Narendra Modi government, about 80 percent tax filers did not file their GST returns for the financial year 2018-19, as among the 90 lakh taxpayers, only 19.3 lakh taxpayers filed their GST returns by August 3. New Delhi, August 9: Despite repeated deadline extensions by the Narendra Modi government, about 80 percent tax filers did not file their GST returns for the financial year 2018-19. A report states that among the 90 lakh taxpayers, only 19.3 lakh taxpayers filed their Goods And Services Tax (GST) returns (forms 9, 9A and 9C) by August 3. Following this, the Union government extended the deadline until August 31.

In order to get the registered taxpayers pay their GST on time, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Chairman Pranab K Das - in a letter to all top officials across the country - said to have encouraged them to initiate an outreach. On the other hand, taxpayers blame complicated procedures for not filing the GST returns. Stating more about the reasons behind the delay in filing the GST returns, the article says, as quoted by TOI, "If your business is spread in four states, you have four registrations, while the balance sheet is consolidated. So, you need to split things all over again. You can’t go by your monthly filings."

It is to be known that companies with a turnover of Rs 2 crore need to be audited - a condition the taxpayers have yet to fulfil. While chartered accounts' preoccupancy with income tax return filings has impacted the completion of their audits.
