Srinagar, August 27: To make available government benefits to people of Jammu and Kashmir, the government is mulling to intensify the Aadhaar enrollment process in the state, especially in the Kashmir Valley. Reports inform that as the penetration of the unique ID is very low in the Valley, the Centre has plans to carry out the enrollment process as early as possible, following which, people can avail benefits of various government schemes. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the process will gain momentum after the bifurcation of the region into two Union Territories is complete on October 31, officials said on request of anonymity. The main aim of the government is to ensure that every household in the Valley must get benefits of Central schemes. The official further added saying that as Aadhaar is a successful tool for the transfer of subsidies and implementation of welfare schemes, it will be of great use in the Valley to streamline government schemes.
Also, the as the Centre is committed for development of the state, the 12-digit biometric will be one of the key tools that will help the Centre in fulfilling its commitment. The official added saying that several areas in the region, mainly in the Valley, need special attention, which can be done through banks, post offices and Common Services Centres (CSCs). The report says that the Aadhaar coverage by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in J&K has reached about 78%. However, in some areas, the penetration is still very low. On August 6, the government gave its nod to the resolution that abolished Article 370, which grants special status to Jammu & Kashmir. The decision paved way for the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories – J&K with a legislature and Ladakh, without legislature.
