Gorakhpur, August 12: In a rare and surprising medical case, a 46-year-old man discovered female reproductive organs inside his body during surgery for a hernia in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The man, identified as Rajgir Mistri, had been experiencing severe stomach pain, prompting him to seek medical help. Upon examination, doctors found that a hernia caused the pain. However, during surgery, they uncovered an underdeveloped uterus and an ovary, a condition known as Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS). Mistri, a father of two, had previously shown no signs of this condition.

As per an India Today report, Mistri, who had been experiencing severe stomach pain, sought medical help, leading to a diagnosis of a hernia. He attended a free hernia check-up camp where an ultrasound revealed a piece of flesh pressing against internal organs. During surgery, doctors were astonished to find that this flesh was actually an underdeveloped uterus and an adjacent ovary, a condition known as PMDS. Aligarh: Doctors Leave Towel Inside Women’s Stomach During Delivery in UP, Probe Ordered After Outrage.

What is PMDS?

Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome is a rare congenital disorder where the Müllerian ducts, which typically develop into female reproductive organs in females, persist in males. This condition occurs due to a failure of the Müllerian inhibiting substance to suppress the development of these ducts during male fetal development. As a result, males with PMDS have female reproductive organs alongside their male genitalia, though they usually exhibit no outward signs of the condition. Uttar Pradesh: Doctors at RMLIMS in Lucknow Remove Second Heaviest Tumour in India, Weighing 5.5 Kg, From Woman's Kidney.

The condition is so rare that it often goes undiagnosed until later in life, typically when an individual experiences related symptoms or undergoes surgery for another condition. Despite the internal presence of female reproductive organs, Mistri showed no external signs of PMDS and had led a normal life until the hernia revealed the anomaly. Following the successful surgery by Dr Narendra Dev and his team at BRD Medical College, Mistri is now recovering, and his condition has been managed.
