Amritsar, August 2: A visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar is incomplete without having the langar (community food). Almost every devotee who visits here makes a point to have it. So on a daily basis, there are at least 60,000 devotees who come here and have the langar. In order to reduce the wastage and also make it economical, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will set up a biogas plant in the premises. The Amritsar Municipal Corporation will help them in the setting up of this plant which costs around Rs 2 crore.
The biogas will help in the maintaining round-the-clock kitchen of the temple. Besides a lot of leftover vegetables is wasted every day, which will now be utilised well. The plant will be set up in collaboration with HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd) under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) head. Golden Temple Renovation: Domes of Four Entrances to be Plated With 160-kg Gold.
The SGPC has marked a plot near the langar hall, which is under expansion. The langar that is offered today is prepared on LPG fuels and partially on the firewood. Once the biogas starts, there will be no need for wood, which also helps in curbing down the pollution. Biogas would be also economical, considering the cost of gas cylinders. About 90 cylinders are used up daily to prepare the langar and during some special occasions, the numbers only increase. Earlier, they used to get these cylinders on a subsidy, but after the removal, the cost has escalated to Rs 1,086 for each cylinder.
The kitchen will be adopted into a smart kitchen, which will reduce the wastage and whatever is created will be recycled for fuel purposes. The report regarding the plan has been submitted and it would take around four months for the complete setup. It is definitely a good move that will come in soon.
