Usgao, August 3: A tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening in Causme-Nanus, Usgao, when a toddler drowned in a stream. The child fell into the stream after slipping from his mother's arms while she was distracted trying to get network reception on her cellphone. The mother had stepped outside their home to make a call but lost grip of her child, who then fell into the water. Despite her immediate attempt to rescue him, the child lost consciousness before help arrived. Emergency services declared the toddler dead at the scene.
According to a Times of India report, the child, identified as the son of 21-year-old Sharmila Devi Das and her husband Prakash, was lost after slipping from his mother’s arms. As per the report, Sharmila was trying to get a network signal on her cellphone and had stepped outside their home while carrying her child. As she moved a short distance away in an attempt to find a better network, the toddler fell into the nearby stream, which had been swollen due to recent heavy rains. Sharmila immediately discarded her phone and attempted to rescue her son but was unable to reach him in time. Despite her urgent attempt to save her child by throwing away her phone and calling her husband, Prakash rushed to the stream but could not revive the toddler, who had lost consciousness. Emergency services arrived, but the child was declared dead on the scene. The body was subsequently taken to the South Goa District Hospital for an autopsy. The Ponda police have registered a case of unnatural death and are conducting an investigation led by PSI Sushant Gaonkar to determine the full circumstances of this tragic event. As per the report, Sharmila Devi and Prakash both were employed as caretakers of a local horticultural farm and were living in a rented accommodation in the area.
