It is known by now that the state of Goa was under the Portuguese colonial rule. The movement to free the state from their rule started in the 19th century. The beginning of the small-scale revolts and uprisings began from the 1940s and went on for almost 15 years. While India got its independence on August 15, 1947, the colonies were still reeling under the Portuguese. After years of struggle, Goa became an independent state on December 19, 1961. Various events are held in country's beach capital to mark this day of independence. CM Manohar Parrikar has also wished every Goan for  Goa Liberation Day 2018. November 1 is State Formation Day for Seven Indian States: Know Why and How Karnataka, Kerala, MP, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh Formed.

The Portuguese started colonising in the country since 1510, and after about 450 years, their rule ended. The policies imposed by them were brutal and they forced many Hindus living in the state to convert to Christianity. People from the state held many revolts but none of them worked well until the start of the 19th century. In the 1940s the Goan independence movement gained momentum and it sought its inspiration from the Indian freedom struggle. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia made a significant contribution to help the state achieve its freedom. A military operation was conducted on 18 and 19 December 1961 to drive out the Portuguese and the Indian troops were successful.

The liberation is an important day to all the Goans and people take to social media to wish each other and also remember those who lost their lives in achieving freedom. There are marches held in different parts to respect the contributions of the freedom fighters.
