New Delhi, July 24: In the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019 rankings, India has been placed on the 52nd position. This marks a significant jump as compared to last year, when India was positioned at the 57th spot. The report detailing the rankings was released on Wednesday by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

The GII rankings are based on assessing 129 countries on a total of 80 indicators, ranging from from intellectual property filing rates to mobile-application creation, education spending and scientific and technical publications. IIT Madras Students Win SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s Heart With HyperLoop Pod

The report is prepared annually by Cornell University and INSEAD, incoordination with the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and GII Knowledge Partners.

The report released this year is the 12th edition of GII rankings. For India, it would serve as a shot in the arm for the Narendra Modi government which has focused on innovation in all realms of the industry.

Meanwhile, Switzerland has retained its number-one spot on the index. Other nations in the list of top 10 are: Sweden, the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Germany and Israel.
